Powerleague launches “World Cup Ringers” with Emile Heskey
With the World Cup upon us, England’s grassroots players have revealed just how valuable replacement ringers can be, with 84% having experienced a teammate dropping out on the same day, leaving squads scrambling around last-minute.
With around 65,000 England and Scotland fans expected to travel out to North America for the World Cup, there’ll be a few more teams left short this tournament period.
That’s why Powerleague, the UK’s leading small-sided football operator, of more than 1,000 grassroots football players across the UK, is launching its “World Cup Ringers” campaign to tackle tournament shortfall and ensure that people can still celebrate the passion that drives grassroots football, with a very special guest.
One lucky team will have the opportunity to strengthen their squad with ex-England target man, Emile Heskey.
Speaking on his involvement in the campaign, Heskey said: "Letting your teammates down at any level is the last thing you want to do, so I’m happy to be filling that gap for one team so they can put some of the skills they see on the World Cup pitch into action." Heskey also highlighted how the grassroots game is an important part of football. "It’s a way that people can come together, socialise and celebrate their shared love of the game," he said.
John Gillespie, CEO of Powerleague, added: “We know that the last-minute scramble for a 5-a-side ringer can be a frustration for teams, whether it’s through injury or just the demands of daily life, things can often get in the way. We’re really excited to have Emile making a surprise appearance down at one of our venues – I’m sure his goal-scoring ability would be a welcome addition for any team!”

Entries will close on Wednesday 17 June, with the special appearance expected w/c 22 June at a Powerleague venue.
