Good and Bad PR: We are singing the praises of Eurovision and Ed Sheeran

We’re officially on week nine of working from home, and you might be wondering if this column is going start reintroducing some bad PR examples to balance out the good once again?

Not just yet I’m afraid!

We’re heading towards what is promised to be another gloriously sunny bank holiday weekend, and we are even allowed to visit some friends and family members (socially distanced, obvs) so let’s keep things positive shall we? Even if it is for just one more week!

Aldi and Deliveroo
For anyone that loves Aldi as much as I do, but has always been left frustrated by the lack of an online delivery service, an announcement made this week is probably about to make your day!

That’s right, the budget supermarket has teamed up with Deliveroo and will be trialling an on-demand home delivery grocery service.

Those using the Deliveroo app to order their shopping will be able to pick and choose from more than 150 fresh items – like bread, milk, fruit and vegetables – stocked by the retailer. Goods will be subsequently packed by Aldi staff in-store and delivered to your front door by a Deliveroo rider in around 30 minutes. Couldn’t be simpler!

Here’s the catch. There’s only one place in the UK trialling the service at present!

Although only initially being tested at stores in the city of Nottingham and then further afield to seven more stores in the East Midlands in the coming weeks, it is hoped that the initiative will become a nationwide service by the end of 2020.

Wagamama
I’m pretty sure I’ve declared by undying love and infatuation for restaurant chain Wagamama in this column before, and I’m going to do it again right now.

I LOVE WAGAMAMA.

I love it even more today after finding out that the chain is planning to reopen 67 of its 135 UK restaurants for delivery before the end of the month, with my local (Cheltenham) currently scheduled to reopen on May 28th – just in time for pay day!

Those craving some katsu curry or yakisoba will be able to order via Ubereats, Deliveroo or Just Eat, but due to less staff working in the kitchens during this still uncertain time, there will be limited menu options available in the short-term.

As long as there is chilli, and as long as there are noodles, I will be a happy woman.

Eurovision
Last Saturday was supposed to be the live final of the 64th annual Eurovision Song Contest, but due to Covid-19 it was unfortunately cancelled until next year. Whilst I am aware that to many people, it’s nothing more than a night of cheesy pop and awful jokes, it’s one of my guilty pleasures and I felt really sad about there being no live show from The Netherlands (the winners from 2019) this year.

Luckily for me, the organisers of one of the most iconic talent shows in the world decided that despite it being impossible to go ahead with the traditional event, they could still put something together to fill the Eurovision shaped hole in our lives.

The ‘Europe: Shine A Light’ show saw Eurovision stars from past and present join together for a live show celebrating not only the magic history of the event, but also the 41 songs and artists that won’t be able to perform this year.

It was a really beautiful, and at times emotional show, and even had UK compere Graham Norton close to tears at one point so you know it was good!

Bring on Rotterdam 2021!!

Ed Sheeran
Everyone’s favourite red-headed folk singer has made it into the column this week after it was revealed in multiple media sources that he’s secretly donated the hefty sum of £170k to the school where he first met his wife, Cherry Seaborn.

How cute is that?

The donations have been made over the course of a two-year period, and have come through a foundation the singer set up called the ‘Ed Sheeran Suffolk Music Foundation’. So far it has helped the Thomas Mills school gain access to items such as Macbooks, new cameras and a photography darkroom.

What a guy.
