Seven years ago, I started Catch Communications from my bedroom with a simple idea: help brands tell their stories in ways that matter.
Today, reflecting on this journey, I realise it’s been as much about personal growth as it’s been about business success.
Here are seven lessons I’ve learned along the way.
1. Relationships matter more than reach
In PR, it’s easy to get caught up in metrics – followers, impressions, press mentions. But I’ve learned that relationships are the currency that lasts. Building genuine connections with journalists, clients, and collaborators creates trust that no data point can replace in this region.
2. Adaptability is non-negotiable
The media landscape evolves rapidly. What worked yesterday may not work tomorrow, heck what worked last month could no longer work. Early on, I learned to pivot quickly, embrace new platforms, and experiment with formats. In the world of PR, adaptability isn’t just a skill – it’s survival.
3. Your brand is a living thing
Brands aren’t static, they evolve as you do. I’ve learned that building a strong personal brand is just as important as developing the agency’s brand. Clients connect with the person behind the company, but the agency must also stand on its own with a clear identity and purpose. When both grow intentionally and stay true to their values, they attract the right opportunities.
4. Resilience Is your real superpower
PR moves fast, and so does entrepreneurship. Not everything will go your way
– but the ability to bounce back quickly is what keeps you in the game. Whether it’s a campaign that didn’t land, a client that suddenly changes direction, or a challenge behind the scenes, resilience allows you to reset, refocus, and move forward with clarity. In this industry, your comeback matters more than the setback.
5. Own your mistakes
As a business owner, mistakes are inevitable – especially when it comes to working with clients who aren’t the right fit or making hiring decisions that don’t work out. Denying or avoiding errors only slows growth. Owning them, learning from them, and adjusting your approach is what turns setbacks into invaluable lessons.
6. Teamwork transforms
PR may be fast-paced and proactive, but it’s never a solo sport. Surround yourself with people who complement your skills, challenge your thinking, and share your values. The right team doesn’t just get the work done – they elevate it.
7. Character and values define the business
At the core of every decision, every client, and every campaign are the values that define us. Integrity, empathy, and respect for others guide how I have always operated at Catch, and shaped the culture we’ve built. Success without values feels empty, staying true to what you believe in is what builds a business that lasts.
