Good and Bad PR: We continue enjoying our food this week thanks to Magnum, Aldi and Wagamama

Is it really that time of the week again? And can someone please explain to me HOW it’s already May and we’re almost in week SEVEN of the UK lockdown? Another healthy dose of positivity in my round-up of only the loveliest and happiest examples from this crazy world we call PR.

Magnum/Deliveroo

King-of-indulgent ice cream Magnum has been on fire in terms of securing UK coverage this week, after it was announced that it was taking advantage of the April heatwave and offering ice cream kits that Britons could cool down with whilst continuing to self-isolate indoors.

The brand decided to team up with delivery app Deliveroo and offer DIY ice cream kits to some lucky individuals across London. To mimic the effects of the renowned ‘Magnum Pleasure Stores’, recipients of the kits were delivered a kit of sticks and toppings, allowing them to create their own dream Ruby Magnums from the comfort of their own homes.

Aldi

In order to further pivot its offering during the continuation of the UK lockdown, Aldi has this week announced that the launch of a welcomed new scheme that will allow volunteer shoppers to collect groceries for those deemed the most vulnerable during the pandemic, and continue their access to fresh and affordable produce.

The vouchers can be purchased online at vouchers.aldi.co.uk, and can then be sent to any address in the UK, making it easier for volunteers to go and buy necessary items for those wary of leaving their homes. There is no additional cost charged to shoppers that send the vouchers to those helping them out, and they can be bought in denominations of £5.00 and £10.00.

Firebox

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or socially distancing yourself from Netflix during your time in lockdown, then there is a very strong chance you will have come across Tiger King, AKA the BEST documentary of ALL TIME!

I’m seriously obsessed with everything about it, so I couldn’t not include that face that Firebox has launched a range of ‘Joe Exotic Condoms’ after the likes of Metro, Joe.co.uk and Mirror covered it this week.

The prophylactics, created in response to the nationwide shortage that’s been reported since the start of the lockdown, are described as ‘the perfect latex cage for your wild and untamed beast’ and will cost you back £9.99 for four.

A pretty hefty price tag you might argue, although – speaking from experience – an absolute pittance compared to the cost that people will be faced with when we experience the lockdown baby boom at the end of the year!

Wagamama

If there is one dish I am craving more than any other during lockdown, it’s the chicken katsu curry from Wagamama.

Whilst I do class myself as a pretty decent home cook, it’s not something I’d ever attempted to make before, until I saw that head chefs representing the restaurant chain have released step-by-step video guides of how to make some of its most classic recipes, as well as a list of all the ingredients needed for you stock up on during your next supermarket visit.

Alongside my beloved Katsu Curry, other recipes that people are being given the chance to try at home include the wok fried greens, and the classic noodle dish, chicken and prawn yakisoba. Yum.

Happy cooking!

2.6 Challenge

Due to the sad fact that charities up and down the UK were set to miss out on millions of pounds worth of fundraised cash due to the cancellation of the London Marathon last Sunday, one clever runner decided to instead raise money by encouraging Britons to take part in the 2.6 challenge from their own homes.

Participants taking part could be sponsored to do something related to the number 2.6 or 26; including lifting 26kg of weight, running 2.6 km, or even learning to count up to 26 in a foreign language – anything was a possibility!

It’s too early to determine exactly how much will be raised at the moment, and it’s not too late to take part if you feel inspired to do so. Millions will no doubt be raised thanks to the efforts of good-hearted Britons doing their parts to help charities missing out of vital funding during the global pandemic!
