Good and Bad PR: From Colin the Caterpillar cake to pub-scented candles…

What a week. Full of uncertainty, questions and one of the most confusing pre-recorded government speeches many of us will have ever watched! If you’re feeling a little down about the prospect of still not being able to get back to a ‘normal’ way of life, hopefully my round-up of some of the loveliest and most positive examples of PR I’ve spotted from the last week will go some way in cheering you up!

M&S
If you’re British, there’s a VERY strong chance that you’ve celebrated a birthday or two with the iconic ‘Colin the Caterpillar’ birthday cake. It’s a rite of passage as far as I’m concerned, and if it’s good enough for the Beckhams on their birthdays, then it’s good enough for me!

The team at Marks and Spencer has decided to implement a special birthday and gift delivery service to anyone wanting to cheer up a loved one who has quite frankly had enough of lockdown after more than 60 days being stuck indoors.

The Colin the Caterpillar gift bag, costing £20, contains a Colin cake, vegetarian Colin the Caterpillar gummy sweets, a foil balloon for birthday celebrations and an M&S tote bag.

As well a Colin, M&S is delivering other cakes, as well as prosecco, Swiss chocolate and luxury shortbread.

Emmett Lowry
Whilst it might seem as though the entire world is on pause right now, every so often I will read a story online that will brighten my day and reinstate my faith that good things are still happening every day and the world is becoming more tolerant and accepting of those different to us.

Take California-based Emmett Lowry for example, a beautiful one-year-old boy who hasn’t let the fact he has Down syndrome stop him becoming a child model for the likes of Gap, DokATot and Tenth & Pine. Emmett’s Mum Sarah set up an Instgram page and blog to document her parenting journey and Emmett’s life shortly after he was born, and regularly posted pictures of him, which led to Gap getting in touch and asking Sarah if they could feature the infant in one of its campaigns.

Sarah hopes that through his modelling work, Emmett can play a part in teaching society to accept children like him for who they are and not having pre-conceived ideas of what having a disability means.

Vera Wang
If you’ve been on Twitter over the past week or so, you might have seen people going absolutely wild over how youthful the renowned wedding dress designer Vera Wang looks considering the fact she’ll be turning 71 later this year!

Ok, in fairness, the woman is worth more than $600 million, so we’ve got to assume she has access to some of the best beauty treatments and cosmetic surgeons that money can buy, BUT you’ve got to give the woman credit for seemingly knocking about 40+ years off her age in some of her Instagram pictures!

Earl of East
Now that we’re eight-plus weeks into lockdown, it’s really hard not to continually think about the many things about ‘normal’ life that we’re all missing. Of course, whilst family, friends and freedom will be ranking high on everyone’s list, the team at Earl of East have created a ‘Scents of Normality’ range of candles designed to invoke some classic smell us Britons are probably all missing.

The limited range, which has been created alongside creative studio Uncommon, includes three candles which all aim to recreate the smell and atmosphere of three favourite hangouts that we can’t get to right now; the cinema, the local pub and the summer festival.

Pretty genius right?

I’ll be honest, the candles aren’t the cheapest, and will set you back £45 each. That being said, all profits made from the sales will be donated to Hospitality Action, which is supporting UK hospitality workers during the Covid-19 pandemic who’ve lost all source of income and work.
