Good and Bad PR: Here are our top PR heroes of the week, starting with the incredible 99-year-old Tom Moore

Despite the restrictions we’re currently living with, I do hope everyone managed to enjoy their bank holiday weekend and made the most of the sunshine! Sticking with the theme that we focused on prior to the Easter break, this week’s column will once again focus on only positive and happy examples. There’s enough doom and gloom out there at the moment as it is – we don’t want to contribute more!

OAP raises millions for the NHS

A 99 year old war veteran has raised more than £5.5 million for the NHS after challenging himself to walk 100 lengths of his garden by the time he reaches his milestone 100th birthday later this month.

The incredible Tom Moore, who served in Burma and India during the second world war after training as a civil engineer, set an original fundraising target of just £1,000 when he started the challenge earlier this month. With more than 250,000 supporters donating to his justgiving page, he has already smashed his target by an astonishing 1,106%!

All the money that Tom raises will be donated to NHS Charities Together, which provides vital funds for patients in need of care when they need it the most.

Amy Schumer gives us some comic relief

Had to add this one in today for the pure reason that it brightened up my morning and made me quite literally laugh out loud!

Hilarious comedienne and Hollywood actress Amy Schumer has revealed that she’s officially changed the name of her young son after realising his first and middles names (Gene Atell) sounded like the word ‘genital’.

You couldn’t make this up, could you?

Speaking on her podcast, Amy revealed that she and her husband had only recently realised their faux-pas, 11 months after becoming parents for the first time. Schumer decided to name her son after her one of her comedy heroes David Atell, but clearly didn’t think the connotations through before signing that first birth certificate.

For those wondering, her son now goes by the name Gene David Fischer. A MUCH safer choice you’d have to agree?

The Big Night In

For the first time in history, Comic Relief will be teaming up with Children In Need next week to offer a huge night of entertainment to Britons feeling the strain of isolating at home.

To take advantage of the huge increase in viewers and to raise funds for both causes, the 3-hour, live broadcast of Big Night In will take place on Thursday 23 April, and will be presented by Lenny Henry, Matt Baker, Zoe Ball, Davina McCall and Paddy McGuinness.

Celebrities already confirmed to make appearances include Peter Kay, in his first TV appearance in more than two years, as well as Catherine Tate, David Tennant and Gary Barlow.

The money raised on the night will be donated towards local charities and projects in the UK, so that they can continue to provide support for those struggling or in need during such an unprecedented period of time.

Parental responsibilities

For a parent, admitting that your child has made mistakes can’t be easiest thing. But one father attempting to show his son the value of apology and admitting when you’ve done wrong has done just that.

A video that went viral on social media over the weekend disgusted viewers after it highlighted two boys intimidating and threatening Asda staff members outside a store in Hampshire. After gaining so much attention, the father of one of the teenagers decided to teach his son a lesson and document it for everyone to see.

Taking to his own Facebook, the father wrote:

“For everyone who has seen a video of this boy threatening members of staff at Asda yesterday. As a Dad I have never been more disgusted and mortified with my son in my life. He has not been brought up to behave in this manner and I do not condone this behaviour at all.”

He went on to explain that the matter is being dealt with by the police, who will now decide what actions to take with his son.

Hats off to this man. He’s clearly determined to ensure his son doesn’t continue down a path of destruction and crime.
