Why PR people want an in-house job

Why is it now more competitive than ever for PR people to bag themselves an in-house job? We’ve thought of a few reasons that could possibly explain why. 1. More money Without being too blunt, a pivotal reason to chase after an in-house role seems to be the salary. PR professionals working in-house often find that they receive a higher wage than their PR agency counterparts. For example, according to our PR salary checker, when comparing the average annual salaries of an in-house PR and a PR with an agency job, with a decade of financial services experience in London, in-house PR people tend to earn £2000 more per annum. 2. More interesting work Working in-house may mean campaigning for a variety of products, but you are essentially rooted in one company. Some might say this allows PR professionals to get a deeper understanding of their brand and a greater knowledge of how to get it ‘out there’ successfully. Compared to a PR agency job, where you work on a greater breadth of work for several clients. 3. Work / Life balance Another reason PR professionals often favour an in-house position is the effect it can have on your leisure time.  As someone working in-house you are likely to have much more regular hours; securing that extra bit of time away from work whilst your PR agency pals are up at night composing pitches for prospective clients! 4. Better perks Ever wanted to work in a job with a few extra benefits thrown in? Of course you have, everyone wants that. So if you bag yourself an in-house job you are more likely to get some decent benefits. It could be a great pension scheme, a shiny new iPhone or, if you're especially lucky, a company car. Unfortunately for PR agency professionals, these treats seem to be far less likely. 5. Less London-centric Not a fan of the Big Smoke but still want to work in PR? Well maybe an in-house job is what you need. The majority of the UK's big PR agencies reside in London, keeping themselves in the middle of the hustle and bustle as they look for clients. However, the nature of an in-house role, working for one company, means such jobs crop up anywhere in the UK. So if you are averse to the congestion charge, the early morning tube rush and the higher cost of living, work in-house. 6. Lower stress levels All things considered, it also seems as though your stress levels wouldn’t be quite as high if you were to work in-house. You wouldn’t have to worry about how to get/who will be your next client. You wouldn’t have to spend hours researching a number of individual companies and potential clients to create strategies; you’d be grounded in one company’s persona. You’d be able to sink your teeth into some interesting projects. And, I’m sure, you’d also be able to relax more in the knowledge that you’ve got that extra bit of pocket cash – so you can treat yourself to a few more glasses of the good stuff when you finish work.
