It may be an early start for Mulberry Marketing’s Chris Klopper, but it’s still a late finish

My day

5.20am: Wake up bright and early and review my emails from overnight on my iPhone. I head downstairs where my two lunatic Slovakian Pointers leap all over me leaving their dusty, dirty canine paw-prints on my black Canali suit which means … I then head upstairs to change again.

6.00am: Out of the house for the 15-minute walk down the country lanes to the station. On my way, I put in a call to the Melbourne office to welcome our latest recruit there to the Mulberry family.

7.00am: Off the train at Waterloo East and straight to Soho Gym in Brad Street which is a moment’s walk from the Mulberry London office. I do cardio, machines and, best of all, pound the punch bag while keeping an eye on the bank of screens for breaking news or replays of goals that my beloved Everton scored the night before.

8.30am: I settle into the office and start the day with an internal meeting with the whole London team. It’s the usual daily round up of what everyone is working on, new business opportunities and upcoming client projects. Also a quick check to make sure that there are no issues with any clients and that we are delivering the required service levels and desired outcomes.

9.30am: I make a few calls to journalists to schedule background briefings for clients. I then grab a cup of coffee and sit down with our design team to finalise the look and flow of a new business presentation that I have to give in a few days.

10.00am: Call new business prospects to provide an overview of our services and discuss how we can help solve their communications needs. Get bounced more often than not, but one in particular was promising, wanting a new approach for a multi-lingual, international e-newsletter campaign which is a field where we have good prior experience.

11.00am: Dial into a client conference call to review and finalise details for its presence at the upcoming ISSA/Interclean trade show in Amsterdam. We are designing and building its stand, organising media briefings, and staging a gala awards dinner for its EMEA distributors, so there’s plenty to discuss.

12.30pm: Lunch today is a toasted cheese and marmite sandwich from an excellent place around the corner called DGs where the ladies make whatever concoction you desire. This is followed by blueberries from the ludicrously busy Sainsbury’s in Waterloo Road.

1.30pm: The Jacksonville, Florida office is now open for the day so I give a quick call to check in with the team. After that, in short turn the Chicago and Cincinnati, Ohio offices open too so I catch up with them also.

2.00pm: I catch up on emails, voicemails, social media sites and client Google alerts.

3.00pm: I dial in to conference call for a client update meeting to discuss its B2B social media schedule and strategy.

4.00pm: The London team gathers in the conference room to brainstorm storyboard ideas for production of some customer testimonial videos in France over tea and Curly Whirly cake from the rightly famous Konditor & Cook.

6.00pm: I catch the train home, eat dinner, put the kids to bed, then frantically pack because I have to head to Heathrow.

9.15pm: Board the BA flight to visit Mulberry Singapore. Almost before the plane takes off I am dozing off. Looking forward to a Tiger beer on arrival the other end with a long-standing client.
