Good and Bad PR: Cakes, chocolate, flowers and a heartthrob, what’s not to love?

So here we are again guys; it’s officially May.

We’ve got a bank holiday Friday, the sunny weather has returned somewhat (depending on where you live!) and so in keeping with the positivity, the column for this week will once again only focus on the happy and positive things that people and brands are doing in order to help out in the fight against the Covid-19 virus.

Michael Condron

Whilst the majority of us won’t be familiar with the name ‘Michael Condron’, if you’re a fan of the iconic HBO show Game Of Thrones then you might just recognise the actor from his portrayal as Bowen Marsh, First Steward Of The Night’s Watch.

Well, seeing as there are no acting jobs available right now, and in a drastically different role than he’s used to, Condron has taken up a temporary job at the local brand of Asda in his home city of Belfast. He is now helping those in the most vulnerable positions ensure that their groceries are delivered amidst the pandemic and is even tempted to continue with the job part-time alongside his acting career once lockdown is lifted.

Crediting the job, which requires him to transport around 17 deliveries per shift, with helping to keep him in a ‘good place’ mentally, the only downside is that he’s unable to see his girlfriend during lockdown, as she’s living with her mum.

What a guy, let’s hope he gets to see her very soon!

Home Bargains

Many people trying to look on the positive side of lockdown are embracing the extra time to spend with loved ones in the family home, and what better way to bond than with some good old-fashioned baking?

The Great British Bake Off is one of my all-time favourite TV shows, so I’m all for baking cakes and sweet treats in a time of panic, but if I see ONE more loaf of banana bread on my Instagram or Twitter feed I will probably never look at that fruit again.

The team at Home Bargains clearly agree, and this week launched a £20.99 ‘baking essentials’ box, containing a vanilla sponge mix, a chocolate fudge sponge mix and a lemon sponge mix, as well as some other essential items any novice baker will need in their kitchen!

Cadbury Dream

Those of you with a particular love of nostalgic chocolate bars will undoubtedly remember the Cadbury white chocolate ‘Dream’ bar, which was launched back in 2002 and sadly discontinued in the UK a few years later after disappointing sales. Clearly I wasn’t using my pocket money wisely enough back when was 10!

Despite the product still available for purchase in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, us Britons still craving a Dream would have to pay around £6 for one bar – until now that is!

That’s right confectionary fans, you can once again buy a 180g bar of the good stuff from B&M for just £2.99.

What a mood boost.

The Big Flower Fight/Netflix

As I’ve already mentioned once on here today, The Great British Bake Off is a huge love of mine, and so an upcoming Netflix series called ‘The Big Flower Fight’ that is being billed as GBBO for flower arranging has understandably gotten me ridiculously excited.

Yes. Yes I do realise how sad that makes me sound.

The show will feature ten two-person teams of floral sculptors from around the world battling it out each week in creating horticultural masterpieces out of flowers and plants and with the ultimate prize of being able to create their own sculpture that will be displayed in London’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

Iconic comedian Vic Reeves and actress Natasia Demetriou are presenting the show, and from the looks of the trailer already have some excellent chemistry. They will be joined by regular judge and celebrity florist Kristen Griffith-VanderYacht, who’ has been named the Top Florist in the world for two years running, so they know what they’re talking about! Other guest judges and floral experts will be joining the three each week in specially selected challenges.

I’m pretty sure this show, which will be on Netflix from 18 May, will make me want to quit my job and turn my hand to floristry.
