It seems that PR is finally moving on from the nadir moments of 2010. Last year’s fortunes were, in some ways, characterised by agency heads telling PRmoment how well they were doing, but resolutely refusing to put a number on their good fortune!
So what do I base my optimism on? A conversation? Heresay? Have I seen the numbers? No. Very simply, recruitment. Always an excellent barometer of the confidence of any market. And during 2010 most agencies, and corporates for that matter, had a recruitment freeze or worse still redundancies.
A chat with a couple of PR recruitment consultancies, and a cursory look at the number of Recweets (Recruitment Tweets, yep I made that up!) going around and you can see that the recruitment market is having a renaissance. Talk to agency heads and they’ll tell you they still can’t find quality candidates with the right experience levels, but hey, that’s another story.
So PR, along with the rest of the economy, is on the up. Will it last? Is the recovery robust? Cleverer people than me can answer that question, but for what it’s worth, I wouldn’t break out the champagne just yet!
