Five work-life tips

As it can be hard for us to switch off at the end of the day, I recommend following these five simple tips to get the best possible work-life balance.
1. Avoid being on your emails 24/7
Even though the news agenda is 24/7 it doesn’t mean we have to work the same hours too. I have been known to check the news almost hourly in the past to see if there are any opportunities for my clients, but being switched on all the time isn’t good for your mental health. I’d recommend doing a final check of your emails on your commute home then switch them off and don’t check them until the morning. You’ll be much better rested having a full 12 hours without checking what’s going on.
2. Don’t overwork yourself
Early on in your career it’s easy to overwork yourself as you try to impress your new employer and strive to be the best you can. What I’d recommend is don’t work yourself into an oblivion, as long as you are organised, willing to learn and inquisitive, you are going to make a good impression. I’d also suggest the usual tactics such as fully unwinding with exercise to give yourself a much-needed break from a hectic work schedule.
3. Stay in touch with the news
Even though you’ve switched off your emails, make sure there is time in your day to keep abreast of the latest news, twice a day is more than enough, you don’t need to check on world news compulsively.
4. Get involved with anything and everything
I’d suggest to anyone starting out in the industry to get involved in every event and activity that you possibly can. It’s a great way to meet people and network with peers in your industry. You never know when you might need the help of someone in your network and anyway, it tends to is good fun.
5. Enjoy what you do
My final tip for remaining sane in this industry, is to love what you do. I know people always say, ‘love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life’, well that is true.
