Best PR job in the world?
6th March 2017
Karl Webster has a job that may make you green with envy, he is cluster director of PR and communications at Anantara Resorts and Spas, based in The Maldives, where he looks after four five- and six-star properties. The question is, is this the best PR job in the world? Webster certainly thinks so. Here he describes his role, how he landed it and what makes it so special.
How did you hear about this job?
I was headhunted through an international recruiter. The position initially came through Singapore, which obviously made things even more interesting.
How did you land the role?
Essentially, through previous and relevant experience of destination work in the Caribbean in addition to structured agency experience in a UK market. A luxury background helped also. Then, a series of interviews with the companies corporate team and senior people from hotels themselves.
Why is it the best PR job in the world?
Well, working in what is effectively paradise on a day-to-day basis speaks for itself. I wake-up to the sun and it is the same at the end of the day, everyday. Being an international company requires travel to key feeder markers, which I really enjoy. I also feel that what I am doing makes a difference to the brand. Finally. I'm working in a new cultural environment meeting new and diverse people, something I thrive on.
What do you love most about it?
Working with challenging international markets to increase brand exposure.
How does it compare to previous jobs?
I never, ever have the same day twice. Plus, working largely speaking on a sandbank sort of makes it different to everything and anything I've done before.
What is the best part of every day?
Sunrise and sunset.
