Hedgehog Hall of Fame: Wood Group - Launch of Wood Group’s ‘Living our Values’ Awards

Company: Wood Group Campaign: Launch of Wood Group's 'Living our Values' Awards Category: Internal Communications Campaign of the Year - North - Shortlisted Objective Between December 2010 and February 2011, Wood Group changed significantly. Our workforce grew from 28,900 to 39,000 with the sale of our Well Support business and acquisition of PSN, which meant the Group was in a period of transition, set to grow its position as a world-leading engineering business, the world's leading production facilities support provider, and the world's leading independent industrial gas turbine aftermarket provider. To support this continuing growth and success, the Group saw the creation and roll out of a set of Core Values as an important step in the organisation’s evolution. We had always cared deeply about how we behave and strive to be the best in everything we do, but until then had never formalised our Group values. We set out to formalise and launch a set of Group Core Values as a way of helping to define our organisation and giving us a set of shared values that unite us, define who we are, how we work, what we believe in and what we stand for. Following a review of existing values across our businesses, the Group’s new Core Values were defined as Safety & Assurance, Relationships, Social Responsibility, People, Innovation, Financial Responsibility and Integrity. Target Audience Employee feedback was a crucial element of the programme – it was essential that employees were given the opportunity to help shape and define our values. We conducted an employee consultation process, in which employees were given an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the proposed values, and to offer feedback around whether the wording of each value worked for them, and whether they could relate to the values and apply them in their day to day work. After officially launching the Core Values, our next focus was to develop and launch a campaign to recognise Wood Group people around the world who bring our values to life. These are Wood Group’s ‘Living our Values’ Awards, which are open to our 43,000 employees worldwide. Action On 6 February 2012 we officially launched Wood Group’s new ‘Living our Values’ Awards via an email from Wood Group’s Chief Executive to all employees, supported by widespread promotion across the organisation on employee intranets, posters, promotional tent cards, and through management communications . Seven awards (one for each value) are presented twice yearly to an employee or team who has demonstrated that they are actively living one of our Core Values. Winners receive a trophy, certificate and a £500 ($800) donation to a charity or community group of their choice, and their success is promoted across the organisation on the company’s employee intranet, external website and on information screens within our offices. A values committee was set up with representatives from across the organisation, from different business units and geographic regions, to review all entries and shortlist the finalists. Wood Group senior management then select the winners. The launch and implementation of our 'Living our Values' Awards was developed and managed by the Corporate Communications team. Results Overall, the Group’s Core Values have been extremely well received throughout our organisation, with many offices and businesses visibly relating to the values as evidenced by high adoption and usage of values branding across intranets, websites, presentations, brochures and corporate merchandise. We received 96 entries in the first round of awards (June 2012), with submissions from a broad spectrum of our businesses and locations around the organisation. Feedback from winners has been wholly positive. We received 120 entries for the second round which demonstrates an increasing level of buy-in to the Core Values. The second round finalists have been communicated and the winners are to be announced at the end of April.
