3rd January 2017

The harder they come, Jimmy Cliff
Just seen the film for the 20th time – it’s a Jamaican reggae version of the Robin Hood story – with an unhappy ending. But for getting you uplifted, grooving, and skanking at the computer keyboard this is one of reggae’s finest.

Englishman in New York, Sting
Just for the line ‘Takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile’. It’s like a musical Red Bull to re-energise, pick yourself up and stand up taller after the inevitable creative knockbacks whenever you do something new, challenge the status quo, or are swimming against the tide.

Lazy Sunday, Small Faces
‘They stop me groovin’, they bang on me wall, they’re doing my crust in… close your eyes and drift away’ an injection of irrepressible Cockney wisdom from me favourite band.

Young, gifted and black, Bob & Marcia
I’m having this at me funeral, until someone comes along with a song ‘Old, useless and white’.

Do anything you wanna do, Eddie and the Hot Rods / Teenage Kicks, The Undertones
I couldn’t decide between these – stuff it! Rules are there to be broken. Enjoy the bonus track.
